The S$199 Bose Soundlink Color may be the most affordable portable speaker from this popular brand, but what exactly will you miss out on if you buy it, and does it matter?
It is a simple speaker built with a durable form of plastics and has rubberised sides and button controls, so it's clear that Bose wants this to be a rugged speaker to take camping with. However no where does it say on the box that it's water resistant, so I wouldn't test it. It has an 8 hour battery life, and charges with USB or with an included USB Charger. There are voice prompts which guide you in the set up and pairing which I found pretty useful. It is also small and flat enough to occupy a small corner of your desk!
It may be small and doesn’t have a lot of features, but the speaker does sound pretty good. It belted out Michael Buble's 'Fever' with good clarity and airiness and the speaker sounded rich, despite not having a bass radiator. It lacked bass in certain tracks like Lorde's 'Royals' but overall, it was still very enjoyable to listen to. It has decent track separation at its price point and overall it is quite a treat listening to this speaker. This is despite having just 2 small drivers in it. I find that pretty f**king amazing.
The speaker simply lacks features. At this price point, other brands are offering more in terms of features such as speakerphone, longer battery life and water resistance. Yes it’s built to be rugged but there’s no mention anywhere about water resistance.
Despite its lack of features, the Soundlink Color stands out with great audio performance that is uncommon even with speakers of this price. Definitely a speaker I would recommend, and only because of the sound quality. If you just want a speaker for at home or the office, or to use outside very occasionally, the Bose Soundlink Color will not disappoint.
