The new Sony SRS-X55 portable speaker has the same sexy and minimalist look of its older sibling the X-5. They look exactly the same so what's the improvement?
The SRS-X5 5 has two speakers and a huge bass radiator built right into that sleek body. When you carry it, it feels hefty and expensive, but the price will surprise you. It's got a speakerphone, touch sensitive buttons, Clearaudio+ mode and NFC. One improvement over the X5 is the battery life. Now it's stated 10 hours instead of the previous 8.
This speaker easily has very, very good sound at this price point. It sounds LOUD, it sounds BIG. The bass is so rich and the mids so clear. You get the kind of clarity that you only get with more expensive speakers. Anything I played on it, be it Jazz or pop, sounds great. In short, I am impressed! The issue that the older X5 had, was that it did not sound as good when it's operating on battery versus when you plug it into the wall socket. With the new one yes, there is a difference but you will barely hear it.
You can get slightly better audio when you activate ClearAudio+ mode. Basically this mode will make your music sound wider and clearer, and bass will sound richer. In fact, it sounds so much better that when you activate it, you won't want to go back to the regular mode again. But do note that this will eat into the speaker's battery life. Normally you will get close to 10 hours endurance on 50% volume, but with Clearaudio+ you will only be able to squeeze out 7 hours. We confirmed this in our battery tests. I prefer to take this as the actual battery life because I’ll choose to enjoy better sound all the time.
It is not water resistant, and water resistance is a pretty common feature nowadays. Another bummer is that it charges with a special pin, and not USB! When you’re watching videos the sound goes out of sync with a slight delay, which bothers me because I YouTube so much. Touch sensitive buttons may seem like a great idea but they are too sensitive, you can only avoid pressing the buttons if you carry it while avoiding touching the buttons.
LP Verdict / PRICE
The sound quality is really good for the price of S$299. It sounds big and full bodied, and I love the way it projects sound across the room. It’s so good that it actually comes very close to the performance of the #Bose Soundlink III, but that one you have to pay $200 more. If you want something you can bring outdoors all the time, I will not really recommend this speaker due to the average battery life and with no water resistance. For that I will recommend the #JBL Charge 2+ instead which costs $20 dollars less. But really, I will recommend getting this because I haven’t seen Anything that can give you such good sound at just $299. Available in Black, White and my favourite colour, Red!
