The waterproof UE Megaboom has been around for a while, and finally I've managed to get my hands on a set! Mai tuu liao!
The Megaboom comes in a box that also serves as a hard case for your new investment. I like that the box is nice and durable enough to be carried outside like that. It has a very long battery life of 20 hours on average (Verified by LP!), and if you press both volume buttons together, a beautiful female voice tells you how much battery it has left. Speakerphone sounded loud and clear when I chatted with my wife who was asking me when am I gonna do laundry. Bluetooth connection remained stable up to 30 meters line of sight, or 2 concrete walls away.
We at LP have verified that it is waterproof by giving it our own version of water-parade. ;) You can watch the tekan session here:
One of the best featured of UE portables is that UE app. The app adds a growing set of functions like:
The unique thing about the app is that new features will be added in future, which makes the speaker feel better value for money over time.
This speaker plays much louder than the UE Boom and has more powerful bass. You get clear, room filling sound at just 50% volume. When I listened to 'Let her go' by Passenger the speaker dishes out its vocal clarity and the metallic resonance of the guitar strings. Bass felt tight and rich in tracks like 'Royals' by Lorde, although I wish it had more bass extension. The bass could also sound boxy and I have encountered slightly smaller speakers that gives better separation. Although its cylindrical shape disperses audio better, it still cannot deliver that three sixty degree sound as shamelessly advertised on the box.
What I don’t like about the speaker is that, although it has a 20 hour battery life, it takes a very long time to charge. 8 hours for a full charge! I also note that when my phone is somewhere else charging and I want to skip tracks, or pause my music, I have to do it on my phone and not on the speaker.
The $399 UE Megaboom is often compared with the similarly priced JBL Xtreme. Though the Xtreme is larger and heavier, it does blast out more powerful bass and has a more refined, spacious sound quality. However, the waterproof and shockproof UE Megaboom stands tall in its own way, with an app that makes it so much more fun and enjoyable to use. A definite must buy if you are active and sporty. (Unlike me, no wonder IPPT fail)
Available in Black and blue.
