Sony WF-1000XM6 Firmware 2.0.5 vs 1.5.0 - ANC Improved? 🤔
The Sony WF-1000XM6’s new firmware 2.0.5 adds GMAP (Gaming Audio Profile) support which is actually Bluetooth LE Audio’s gaming profile. So now, when you’re playing games on supported devices, the WF-1000XM6 can switch into lower latency so bluetooth lag is reduced even more.
And you also can use the XM6 buds’ microphones for voice chat without the sound quality getting destroyed. That being said, even if your device supports LE Audio, it may not support GMAP, which is why, to ensure that you do get to use GMAP, you will need a dongle like the Floogoo FMA121 (see below). Anyway, by the end of this video you’ll know whether this update brought any performance upgrades or downgrades to the XM6 earbuds.

Microphone Quality
In terms of mic pickup, there is no difference here as far as I can tell, same voice pickup quality and same performance in noise reduction when in noisy windy conditions.

Active Noise Cancelling
As for active noise canceling, frequency sweeps do show that mostly, there aren’t any differences, and actual usage also feels that way even though there seems to be a slight improvement in the sub bass registers.

Transparency Mode
Transparency mode also seems rather similar according to the measurements, and in actual usage its transparency seems to be just as clear and crisp as before the update.
Sound Quality
As for sound quality, it’s almost identical as you can see from these frequency sweeps. Above 8kHz there seems to be some minute difference, like the brilliance is a bit toned down but in actual fact, the difference is so that I’ll barely notice it’s there.

So that’s how the WF-1000XM6 performs on the new 2.0.5 update. If you’ve also spotted any differences not mentioned in the video, let us know in the comments below.
