COMBINE AirPods Pro 3 with WH-1000XM6 - Total SILENCE?!
The AirPods Pro 3 is the best active noise canceling earbuds. Very few comes even close! But what if I combine these super tiny earbuds with one of the best over ear noise cancelers in the market, the Sony WH-1000XM6? Will this actually deliver the ultimate noise canceling?
AirPods Pro 3’s noise canceling
First let’s see what the AirPods Pro 3’s noise canceling on a graph. As we can see, it’s quite effective at canceling the lower mids and high frequencies dealing with everyday background sounds and human chatter, but it’s even more effective at canceling the low frequencies, very effective against the droning and rumbling of engines and vehicles.
On a plane, these are also powerful noise cancelers, but not very effective against the sound of crying babies. On the other hand, we can see that the WH-1000XM6 is more effective in the upper mids and highs, so it’s going to do much better at dampening the noise of screaming kids, though it’s not as effective in the lower frequencies, most likely due to the internal resonances of the earcups.
AirPods Pro 3 and Sony WH-1000XM6 combined?
Now, what happens if we plug in the AirPods Pro 3, then wear the WH-1000XM6 headphones over them? The result is actually quite surprising. Now, I wasn’t expecting this setup to cancel all noise, but in theory, we should actually see a vast reduction of noise, because noise has to get through the WH-1000XM6 first, then the AirPods cancels whatever is left in the earcups.
Instead we see less effectiveness in the very low frequencies, and only a slight boosting of noise canceling in the rest of the midrange spectrum.
The more significant change is happening in the upper mids to treble region, because AirPods weren't as effective there, so it’s benefiting from the cushions and hardware of the WH-1000XM6 covering over them.
As for why it becomes less effective in the lows, I think it’s because of the internal buildup of low frequency resonance in the WH-1000XM6’s earcups which overwhelmed the AirPods. I’ve recorded some samples under extremely loud simulated cafe noise. First we’re going to hear what their noise canceling is like on their own, and then we’re going to combine them.
