Pure Genius! viaim OpenNote and Notekit
I like watching Japanese VTubers with their cute anime voices but mostly, I cannot understand what they’re saying. Luckily, I’ve got my viaim OpenNote earbuds linked to the viaim app (available on iOS and Android) which provides real time transcription and translation, it even reads out to me what is being said in English.
Now I can finally understand what Tanaka-chan is saying! Language barrier? Gone. Now I want you guys to experience this. This also works for movies and anime which may not necessarily have subtitles, but it’s also very useful in a business setting, if someone’s speaking in a foreign language, the viaim OpenNote’s going to help.
The OpenNote also does a great job with transcriptions of calls, meetings and videos. The earbuds have their own flash memory, so I can either record the audio first on the earbuds by holding down the control button, then transfer the audio recording to the app to have it directly transcribed. After that, it’s up to you.
Do you want to translate it, summarize it - even tracking who said what, or do you want to make a mind-map from the transcript? The viaim app does all that powered by AI models like ChatGPT, or other AI models like Claude and Gemini. And it doesn’t matter which device ecosystem you’re on, could be iOS or Android, these features are available.
What’s also great is that their mics have a 7-meter working range. This means that If I’m sitting at one end of a conference room table, the other person could be at the other end, and it’s going to pick up their voice also.
I’ve actually tested that by playing one of my talking head videos on an iPad set at 50% volume, and even when I’m standing about 7 meters away, the OpenNote's mics is able to transcribe what’s being said on the iPad. As open-ear earbuds, they’ve got ear hooks that go over the ear, made of a liquid silicone rubber wrapping a 0.8mm titanium frame. So they’re actually thin enough to wear glasses over them like what I’m doing. With this form factor, it’s possible to build in a bigger battery so its battery is rated for up to 19 hours per charge, 53 hours with case.
The settings for it in the viaim app are mostly about the recording and transcription features, but you also get sound quality settings in case you want to tweak its sound to your liking. You can also boost its volume for loud, noisy situations. As for its sound quality, frequency sweeps show that it’s more boosted in the upper midrange which is within expectations for such open fit earbuds. viaim NoteKit
So the OpenNote’s great but if you want to level up that experience, you can pair the OpenNote to the NoteKit to add transcription, translation and summaries to your computer. While the NoteKit’s connected to the OpenNote, it sends the audio to the earbuds so you can record from the earbuds’ mics, or you can record audio from the computer’s speakers using its own built-in mic.
Just press record in the viaim app and the mic starts recording from the computer’s speakers. The files are then saved to the cloud managed by the viaim app. What the NoteKit also has is subtitle mode which I find useful because occasionally, I do watch keynotes delivered in Mandarin and this gives me real time translations. As you can see it’s a tiny little dongle that supports USB-A and USB-C connection.
