This IMPROVES Bose QC Ultra Gen 2's Noise Canceling?! 🤔 (Comply)

Today we’re going to look at some ear pad replacements for the Gen 2 QC Ultra. These are from Comply, and they are compatible with both the Gen 2 and Gen 1 QC Ultra. But for the purposes of this video, we’re going to focus on what changes they’ll bring to the Gen 2 Bose QC Ultra headphones, either positive or negative. They cost $25 on Comply’s website, but of course if you use my coupon code ‘LNW-15’ at checkout, you’ll get 15% off the retail price.

The ear pads are super easy to replace, just use the provided tools to pry the cushions out and snap the new ones in, keeping in mind that there’s a unique left right orientation, unlike the stock Bose ones. These are thicker and have a contour at the back which actually increases the space in the earcups.

So if the Bose’s earcups feel too shallow and your ears are pressing against the driver components, these will actually give you more space inside which is also great for people who wear glasses. The skin of the cushions also resists moisture better, so they dry easier when you wipe them, but at the same time, it also feels less breathable so it traps a bit more heat. As for comfort, since these feel stiffer when they’re brand new, you will feel them a bit more than the stock ones, at least till they’re broken in.

Now do these cushions improve the Gen 2 QC Ultra’s performance in any way? Well, as you probably saw from the title, yes they do improve its ANC performance in a sense. But how is it improved, and what about their sound quality and transparency?

Active Noise Cancelling

In terms of active noise canceling, the Comply seems to help the Gen 2 QC Ultra cancel a little more lower mid and low frequency noises so in the following samples you hear less rumble. For most situations it won’t be a huge difference, but the difference can be felt more under intensive noise like in a plane. At the same time, it does seem to resonate more in the higher mid frequencies, possibly due to the extra space in the earcups.

Transparency Mode

For transparency mode, it seems like transparency isn’t passing through as much in the low frequencies when using the Comply cushions, but in actual testing, it seems to be quite similar indeed.

Sound Quality

In terms of sound quality, we are seeing some changes too. The Comply pads seem to pull back the upper mids more so vocals sound a bit more shouty, and there’s even a slight pulling back in the bass. I’m not sure I like the changes, but for those who want a flatter signature this could be an improvement.
