Samsung Buds4 Pro First Impressions 🔥 (vs Buds3 Pro)

We already know that the Buds4 Pro is going to look super different from the Buds3 Pro, and the leaks were accurate, from the clamshell case, the top lid being transparent, the flat stem design without any fancy blade lights, and the grooves that show you where to squeeze and where to swipe to control volume.

But my first impressions, trying the Buds4 Pro myself, is that these are almost similar to the Buds3 Pro in terms of noise canceling performance, but microphone performance is different, and they sound different, and I’m gonna go into a bit more detail in a second, but do note that this round of testing wasn’t done in a controlled setting with my usual test equipment, and I didn’t get to spend much time with them  because of there was a long queue of people, but I will test them properly once I get my hands on some review units, so get subscribed to the main channel for the latest content.

The Buds4 Pro has a two-way speaker setup like the Buds3 Pro, but this time it’s got what Samsung describes as a larger woofer. (I wouldn’t personally call it a woofer, more like a low frequency driver) And comparing their sound A-B playing some of my favorite game soundtracks, I noticed that the Buds4 Pro’s bass registers do sound heavier, it sounds a lot more muted in the upper mid frequencies than the Buds3 Pro. I was like, did they do anything to the EQ settings? So I checked that and nope, EQ was set to default, as was everything else. In my opinion, these sounding more mellow is an improvement, because the Buds3 Pro has a peak between 1 to 2 khz that makes it sound a bit piercing at times, although it didn’t sound as sibilant or piercing as the Buds2 Pro before it. This time, the Buds4 Pro sounds a lot more natural to me. Can’t wait to run some frequency sweeps just to get some solid data on the differences.

Noise canceling performance at max settings didn’t seem like a huge jump, maybe there’s some improvement there, but very subtle. What’s even more obvious is the improvement in transparency. The Buds3 Pro already has fantastic transparency, one of the best in this area, but the Buds4 Pro’s transparency seems to sound more natural, less hissy, and less occluded in the mids.

As for microphone quality, the Buds4 Pro seems to be an improvement over the Buds3 Pro because my voice was amplified louder against the background, although it seems to be the same algorithm reducing background noise and performing voice filtering duties. As for the Buds4, noise-gating seems to be more aggressive, cutting a bit more into my voice.

Listen to the microphone samples.

Of course we also have the Buds4 which doesn’t have noise isolating eartips, and doesn't have active noise cancellation either, so you do need to push the volume up more to get the same level of loudness as the Pro model. And since there’s no noise isolating seal, I thought it sounded a little thin but still quite close to the signature of the Pro model.

So those are my first impressions of the Buds4 Pro and Buds4, compared to the Buds3 Pro. I am going to get some review units, as well as compare them to other top earbuds in the market, so be sure to subscribe to the main channel for the latest content.
