Sony Xperia 1 VII launched - More of the same?

Singapore, 14 May 2025 – Sony has just unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the Sony Xperia 1 VII, which is the next generation of the Xperia 1 VI. This time, Sony teamed up with its own subsidiaries to create a powerful and feature-packed device, collaborating with the Sony Alpha Digital Camera team for the camera, the legendary Walkman division for audio, and its BRAVIA TV division for the display. During the launch, Sony also introduced its new AI technology called Xperia Intelligence, which we’ll be diving deeper into in a bit.
One of the highlights of the Xperia 1 VII is its AI-powered features. Sony introduced AI Camera Work, which ensures that your subject stays centered in the frame even when in motion. The result is a more professional-looking photo with minimal effort. Another feature, Auto Framing, allows you to capture fast-moving subjects with ease while keeping the image sharp, natural, and clear thanks to the advanced AI system.
The Xperia 1 series has always been known for its outstanding camera quality. The Xperia 1 VII continues that legacy with a triple rear camera setup. The main sensor is 48 MP, paired with a 48 MP ultra-wide camera featuring a large 1/1.56 sensor. This makes the ultra-wide sensor 2.1 times bigger than the one on its predecessor. There's also a 12 MP telephoto lens completing the setup.

On the audio front, Sony partnered with Walkman to deliver impressive sound quality. The Xperia 1 VII comes equipped with DSEE Ultimate, which uses AI to enhance low-quality streaming music into clearer and more refined audio, delivered through its built-in stereo speakers.
When it comes to performance, the Xperia 1 VII is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. Sony claims the phone can last up to two full days of active use thanks to its Processing Optimization technology, which improves battery efficiency by 10 percent. Out of the box, the phone runs on Android 15. However, Sony only promises four years of software updates and six years of security patches, which might feel a bit short considering this is a premium flagship device.
Priced at SGD 1989 (£1,399/€1,499), the Sony Xperia 1 VII comes in three colors: Slate Black, Moss Green, and Orchid Purple.
